JV Game- Sept. 15th vs Great Valley
The Shanahan JV team went up against the team from Great Valley, who had one of the best records in the area.
The game began with neither team gaining an advantage, as most of the play took place between the boxes.
For this game, Shanahan switched Austin Goewert to "stopper" and Phil Indekeu to midfield; Both played outstanding games with Austin helping to keep the Great Valley offense off balance, while Phil won the ball time & time again to keep Shanahan in control.
Scott Zimmerman had a super first half, as he created problems for the Great Valley defense, advancing the ball & making several perfect crosses.
At the 21 minute mark, Scott delivered a crossing pass, and due to pressure from Juan Romero & Tim Brogan, a Great Valley defensemen was called for a Hand-ball in the box. Mike Mulry took the Penalty kick for Shanahan and he calmly banged it home to give Shanahan a 1-0 lead.
The defense of Matt DiSanto, Brian Zepka, and Tom McCall, played very well to help shut down the high scoring offense from Great Valley.
Goalie, Chase Valdiserri, stopped three shots on goal- one was a "rocket" from Great Valley's leading scorer.
The first half ended with Shanahan on top, 1-0.
The second half had Shanahan going against a strong wind, but early on in the second half, physical play by Mike Mulry and great efforts by Joey Nagy, & Nick Krapf, kept Great Valley back on their heels.
The balance of play shifted to the Shanahan end as the wind became more of a factor. With 23:40 remaining in the game, Great Valley's striker got free on a break-away and scored from inside the box to tie the game at 1-1.
The Shanahan defense remained under fire for the rest of the game. In the last 25 minutes of the game, Keeper, Chase Valdiserri stopped nine shots on goal, but Great Valley eventually found the back of the net to take the lead, 2-1.
Shanahan did get one more shot on goal with 6 minutes remaining, as Tim Rohlfs out-hustled the entire Great Valley defense and sent a shot past the charging goalie, only to have their sweeper make a great kick-save when the ball was just a foot away from entering the goal.
The game ended in Great Valley's favor, 2-1.

JV Game- Sept. 10th vs Octorara
On Monday afternoon, the Shanahan Boys took-on a very talented team from Octorara.
As the game began, it was obvious Octorara was ready to play, as they started fast & furious; they kept the ball in the Shanahan end for the first six minutes of the game. Shanahan struggled several times to get the ball out of the box and Octorara took advantage of this, scoring a "laser-shot" at the 24 minute mark of the first half, to take the lead, 1-0.
The onslaught didn't end there as Octorara kept the pressure on, getting off six more shots on goal before the seventh one found the back of the net. Octorara, dominating play on the field, now led 2-0 and there was still about 15 minutes remaining in the first half.
Scott Zimmerman took over at this point and gave Shanahan the "spark" it desperately needed. Scott took on two opponents at midfield, won the ball and sped down the sideline. He took on two more defenders but was able to muscle the ball into the box where he fired a shot at the net to score, giving Shanahan "life" and a goal to pull within one of Octorara.
The momentum completely changed and Shanahan now fought & battled Octorara for every loose ball. Mike Mulry & Phil Indekeu took control of the center of the field, while Juan Romero & Tim Rohlfs began putting pressure on the Octorara defense.
With about a minute to play until halftime, Scott Zimmerman took a great pass from Brian Zepka, dribbled to the corner, and sent a super crossing pass which Tim Brogan received & deposited into the goal to tie the game at two. Halftime score, Shanahan 2, Octorara 2.
The second half saw both teams play at their best. The Shanahan Boys showed lots of "fight" with great effort & hustle from Joey Nagy, Austin Goewert, Tim Batog and Nick Krapf. Shanahan made several runs at Octorara and Octorara responded time & time again by putting pressure on Shanahan. The Shanahan defenders; Matt DiSanto, Brian Zepka, Tom McCall, & Josh Redmond, played strong aggressive defense. Chase Valdiserri was exceptional in goal with over 12 saves for the game.
The teams battled on, and it looked like the game would end in a tie. But, with less than a minute to play in the game, Shanahan mistakenly sent the ball in front of its own goal and the Octorara striker pounced on it & punched it into the goal.
After a great comeback effort, Shanahan fell to Octorara, 3-2.

JV Game- Sept. 4th vs. Henderson
The Shanahan JV team took on a much bigger, more experienced Henderson team. Henderson had nine (9) juniors on the field to start the game. The size and experience advantage of the older Warriors was evident from the start, as they kept the ball in the Shanahan end for much of the first half. Shanahan was hurt early in the match as outstanding forward Zach Dobson had to leave the game because of an injury (broken hand?).
Fullbacks Matt DiSanto, Brian Zepka, and Josh Redmond showed great fight as wave after wave of Henderson's forwards & middies made runs at the Shanahan goal. Six minutes into the game, their was a collision on the field with several players going down, allowing for an open shot from inside the eighteen, and Henderson took the lead 1-0.
Mike Mulry and Phillipe Indekeu battled mightily, trying to keep the ball out of the Shanahan end of the field. With about seventeen minutes remaining in the first half, Henderson made another push towards the Shanahan goal and a Warrior forward broke through to bang home a shot from inside the six yard line. Henderson led, 2-0.
Goalie Chase Valdiserri, stopped seven shots on goal in the first half and Shanahan held on to reach halftime, down 2-0.
The second half opened with Henderson starting just four of its Juniors, and Shanahan tried to take advantage. Early in the second half, Alex Wentzel used great determination to push the ball down the field and make a great cross. Scott Zimmerman battled the taller Henderson defenders to bang a header that went just over the cross bar.
Shanahan made some runs behind the hustle of Tim Rohlfs and Juan Romero, but had several shots that just missed from finding the back of the net.
Alex Wentzel, Austin Goewert, and Joey Nagy played an outstanding second half, winning the ball and turning back Henderson time & time again.
Mike Lagace was in goal for the second half and stopped three tough shots on goal.
The game ended with no goals after halftime. The final score had Henderson on top, 2-0.

JV Game- Aug. 31st
The JV team traveled to Radnor Friday morning (8/31) to play their first game of the 2007 season against Archbishop Carroll.
The game started with both teams trying to gain the upper-hand. Mike Mulry and Phil Indekeu soon dominated play in the middle of the field and helped Shanahan keep the ball in Carroll's end. Zach Dobson and Tim Rohlfs were all over the field in the offensive end, keeping pressure on the defense and Keeper.
With about 10 minutes gone in the first half, after the ref's whistle, Austen Goewert took a free kick and placed it perfectly in the box. Juan Romero fought for position and banged a header into the goal. After the Boys celebrated and lined up for tap, the referees discussed the play and called off the goal. The refs ruled that there should not have been a free kick by Shanahan, but a throw-in. The score remained 0-0.
With about 19 minutes remaining in the first half, Mike Mulry, who continued to control the center of the field, stole the ball from a Carroll player...fought off two other defenders before banging a left-footer past the Goalie. Shanahan was up, 1-0.
Shanahan continued to put pressure on the Carroll defense with Alex Wentzel and Scott Zimmerman setting up teammates and keeping the ball in the offensive end. The Carroll Keeper played well, making several saves in the first half. With under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Phil Indekeu, who dribbled around and past Carroll players all game, drilled a shot that found its way into the back of the net. Shanahan was ahead, 2-0.
Carroll showed some fight as they made several runs at Shanahan. With time running out in the first half, a Carroll played slipped past the Shanahan defense to get in the box, and sneak a shot into goal. The halftime score= Shanahan 2, Carroll 1.
The second half saw both teams make runs with opportunities to score. The Shanahan defense of Matt DiSanto, Brian Zepka, Josh Redmond, and Tom McCall, turned back the Carroll forwards, time & time again. The five shots on goal in the second half by Carroll, were all caught or batted away by Shanahan's Keeper, Chase Valdiserri.
The game went back and forth in the second half until Shanahan opened things up with a nice centering pass from Tim Brogan, that Juan Romero took in stride and banged the ball into the back of the net. Shanahan led, 3-1.
The remaining 12 minutes of the game saw the action on the field get more physical. The Boys never backed down and finished up the game to claim their first win of the season, 3 to 1.
Congratulations to the JV team on their first Win of the season!
